Wasteland 2 was the first roleplaying game by InXile funded through Kickstarter. The fundraising campaign, hold in 2012, saw more than 60 000 backers give next to three millions dollars. This success later pushed inXile to emulate, with an even more successful campaign, the experience for Torment: Tides of Numenera.

With another successful Kickstart campaign, Double Fine Adventure (later Broken Age), Wasteland 2 played an important part in the popularization of the crowdfunding platform.

Wasteland 2 also leaded to the creation of a tech partnership between Obsidian (who funded Pillars of Eternity on Kickstarter) and inXile to create better CRPG on the Unity game engine.
