The Quiet House is the manifestation of an entrance into an infinite dimension called the Endless Abode.

Background[ | ]

For reasons that still remain unknown, the Endless Abode will protrude into other dimensions at random intervals, usually taking the form of structures such like the Quiet House. The Quiet House appears no different than any other building within either a village or a city, as a lone dwelling along a road or flat dab in the middle of nowhere, or perhaps even as a newly discovered and unexpected series of chambers connected to a previously familiar structure. The Quiet House will appear, remain for days, months, or even years, and then disappear just as mysteriously as it had arrived.

From the exterior, it doesn't particularly look out of place within the context of its current surroundings; however, those that are familiar with the local area probably know that it mysteriously appeared. Its exterior measurement is 20' by 30', and will seem made from the locally available stone. Except for any specific areas, all chambers are lightless - thus characters will need to provide their own light source for exploration. If the PCs have a way to measure transdimensional energies, the Quiet House is rife with it.

Some chambers contain planar junctures, allowing them to grow in either connection or dimension, other times they will lead to the Hallway of Possibility.[1]

The Entrance[ | ]

A side window of thick glass is the only prover of light for this chamber. A large door made of locally available wood, that appears to also be unlocked, leads into here. Within is dust, detritus left behind from occasional squatters, and a door along the opposite wall. The door appears out of place, given that there isn't such a portal on the opposite side of the house exterior. The door itself is partly stuck, but will yield with a difficulty 4 Might task, thus revealing the circular Crux Chamber beyond.[2]

The Pantry[ | ]

Hanging meats, cheese, and other foods preserved inside of jars, tubs, and sealed in clear synth fill this chamber. Barrels, jugs, kegs, and bottles - any kind of container food can be stored in is stacked on the shelves or hanging from the ceiling.

If one searches through the foodstuffs, they'll sense that many more comestibles are present than initial appearances portray. In fact, it eventually becomes clear that there might be an inexhaustible amount of food. Those willing to put in the time - hours or even days - will find almost any foodstuff, potentially even anoetic cyphers.[3]

The Gallery[ | ]

Paintings and drawings fill this chamber. Some hang along the walls on hooks of synth, but most others are stacked without frames in long rows on the floor. A few of the pieces are landscapes, some of which are familiar. But more often than not, the pieces are portraits of people, rendered in many styles of media. Not all, however, are human, or even humanoid.

If one searches through the artwork, they'll discover more in the room than was first suggested. Those willing to put in the time - hours or even days - will find almost any kind of painting, including one or two that will whisper in strange languages. A pariall might be lurking among them.[4]

The Weird Device[ | ]

A complex device of some sort will fill one chamber. Instrumentation, controls, and various elaborate smaller, subsidiary devices are connected to it, each more complex and involved than the last. Those with knowledge of the numenera that choose to study the device will only be able to focus on one small portion at a time, because the overall function of the mechanism is many orders of complexity beyond normal understanding. For instance, a simple subcomponent of the device operates multiple simultaneous processes, such as pulling water from the air, detecting excess energy spikes within a certain range, calculating transcendent numbers, and counting occurrences of a particular kind of particle. This small machine, in turn, will appear to be sending its reading and collections into another, bigger machine, and so on.[5]

The Writing Room[ | ]

Debris from a smashed desk, rented books and papers, and a litter of smashed items of the numenera scattered about this space. Some of the remnants will show that some of the books contemporary with Earth. Others, however, are written in unknown languages. The dead body of a human, apparently some Nano - in a state best described as half-eaten - is shoved behind the desk.

The only other door inside will open Into the Hallway of Possibility.[6]

The Cloak Room[ | ]

Racks that fill two walls of this room contain hanging clothes. some that are familiar, others that are outlandish, and some that aren't clearly fit for human, or even humanoid, bodies. Most tend to be dusty and tattered as if aged greatly, there are a few newer items also in stock.

Searching through the clothing will give the sense that there are many more garments than were originally perceived. In fact, it eventually becomes clear that there are an endless supply of clothes. Those who are willing to put in the time - hours or even days - will find almost any piece of clothing on the racks, potentially even some artifacts that can offer protection against dangerous environmental conditions.[7]

The Crux Chamber[ | ]

a faded spiral design seems engraved along the stone flooring. This chamber is also known to contain several different exits. If someone walks along the spiral from the exterior all the way to the center, they'll then discover a cavity that wasn't there before, which contains a spiral staircase leading downward. The staircase will descend 30 ft. and open onto the Hallway of Possibility.[8]

The Endless Corridor[ | ]

This is a hallway that will pretty much send characters down along the Hallway of Possibility.[9]
